On this International Day of Roma Spanish Socialist Workers Party would like to congratulate all Gypsy Roma and reiterated their political commitment enshrined in the manifesto with which we attended the 2008 general elections.
We recognize that meet the needs and demands of the Roma requires the efforts not only of government but of all citizens.
The result of this political commitment is the impending approval of the Government Action Plan for the Development of Roma 2010-2012, with the aim of encouraging further action to correct the imbalances between the Roma and the whole Spanish population, and promote various forms of participation and social development to promote full enjoyment of rights and access to goods and services of the Roma population.
In addition, three years ago that the Government of Spain introduced the Roma Cultural Institute, with the intention of strengthening the institutional instruments for the promotion of Roma culture, to be increased by the creation of a documentation center of Roma, and the implementation of the Library and Museum Roma Roma.
Under the Spanish Presidency of the European Union President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, together with other European institutions, has called for a European Roma Summit taking place in this highly symbolic day in the city of Cordoba.
This meeting will be discussed the policies developed by different European national governments and international networks with the Roma people, associations and foundations linked to the Roma community and local and regional administrations.
This shows that the Government of Spain is at the forefront of policy developments with the Roma, as they are showing our community partners.
The results of this European summit is very important for the Roma, but they are for all European citizens.
Europe can not be without the Roma population and this should be an appropriate reflection on the institutions that we have gradually been building.
It is a grave mistake to believe that Europe must be built on ethnic and cultural uniformity, as indicated from conservative positions.
Europe is ethnically and culturally diverse, and therefore these factors, far from being a problem, are a source of enrichment for all citizens.
Socialist Women and men are proud of the strength of the Roma, but it is also time to acknowledge that many laws and policies throughout European history many citizens have been discriminated against by the mere fact of belonging to the ethnic Roma.
Women and men Socialists denounce any practice or policy that discriminates against the Roma people wherever it occurs, and raise our voice with all the European Roma people who demand their right to live in equality and dignity in a Europe of progress.
Congratulations Roma people, Health and Freedom for all, Sastipen thaj mestepen.
