The Ministry of Agriculture and Water and the City Council this week began Cehegín four pilot plantations' But Alcuza 'in farmers' fields to revitalize the indigenous species.
The first plantations, with 890 trees in total were held last Friday at the sites Camino de la Tejera, La Hoya Round pillars, river banks and Salt Water.
The proposed development of the crop is managed and coordinated by the Northwest District Agricultural Office, under the Ministry, and the Department of Agriculture Cehegín, whose technicians have been located and characterized agronomically plots.
It is planned to plant a total of 3,645 trees in a set of 10 plots.
According to the general director of Operations and Training Modernization of Agricultural, Ángel García Lidón, the 'But Alcuza' is "a symbolic culture, heritage of our region, and more particularly Cehegín.
Has different characteristics in terms of unique aromas and flavors that distinguish it from other quality apples, so it enjoys good demand and market value. "
The manager said regional Cehegín City Council believes the local interest of this crop and its potential to increase farmers' income, "and therefore requested the support of the Department for recovery as it was in danger of disappearing to be gradually reduced to small areas. "
The Department and the City Council are developing an R & D on 'But Alcuza' whose ultimate goal is oriented towards achieving the PDO But Cehegín.
This project began in February 2006 in an experimental farm of the Instituto Murciano Agri-Food Research and Development (IMIDA).
Lidón Garcia said, "The first tests were positive and there have been over 3,500 plants free of virus, which has a decisive move into a phase of crop development in this county."
The IMIDA will be performed simultaneously on the experimental farm El Chaparral planting the same plant material, to continue a new regional R & D to provide additional information to that already obtained on new farming techniques and other aspects of interest to be communicated to farmers participating in the development project of the 10 pilot plantations Cehegín, all grown with drip fertigation.
"The trees are grafted on M7, less vigorous than traditional French pattern," said the CEO, "which allows for the harvesting of the fruit directly from the ground, without resorting to ladders or platforms.
This will significantly reduce collection costs and improve the profitability of the plantations. "
Lidón Garcia concluded that the objective of the Department and the City Council is "to recognize the efforts of farmers and the crop recovered, after obtaining the designation of origin, can be supported by a local cooperative industry to improve the economy of this municipality Northwest of the region.
