The operation was initiated following an investigation by specialists of Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Civil Guard, developed last April, the result of which a copy of Yemen chameleon who had been sent were operated by postal parcel, a neighbor of Alicante without any documentation and without sanitary measures required for the transport of live animals.

With this information and under the International Convention on Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the operation 'Gecko' in order to locate the place where the animals were sold and identify those involved in this plot started .

The result of the investigation, the Civil Guard found that there was some social alarm in the municipality of Cehegín where, apparently, had detected the movement of exotic animals like alligators and reptiles and birds of prey of every kind, which were transported to a local garage type with some regularity.

After obtaining the necessary evidence, in recent days, the Civil Guard has developed the operational phase of the operation 'GECKO' which culminated with the entry and registration of the local investigation, which have been found a total of 30 specimens protected than They lacked the required CITES documents, which have been seized.

These are birds, reptiles and exotic amphibians among which an Anaconda (Eunectus NoteIt), Snake False Coral (Lampropertis) Geckos Cresteds (Rackodactylus Cyliatus), tiger salamander (Ambistoma Tigrinum), Rana Pacman Albina (Ceratofirus) and American kestrels (Falco sparverius) and Barn Owl (Tyto Alba), among others, that, once seized, have been made available to the Customs and Excise Murcia.

Besides these animals a total of ten Hedgehogs African (Atelerix Albiventrix), which are included in the Spanish catalog of invasive alien species, being an ecological threat to native wildlife, is forbidden both possession, as they were found transport and trade in them.

In this regard, Law 42/2007 of 13 December on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, established that the competent public authorities prohibit the introduction of species, alien subspecies or geographic races, where these are likely to compete with the species native wildlife, altering its genetic purity or the ecological balance.

Operation 'GECKO' has also culminated in the handling of multiple complaints for violation of the Contraband Act, as well as the possession of potentially dangerous animals responsible for establishing the sale of animals which also carried captive breeding thereof.

The authors of such facts may incur a crime of smuggling or in the commission of an administrative offense of smuggling, which establishes penalties ranging from 1,000 euros for those classified as minor and could reach 50,000 euros in the case of the very serious.
