Cehegín Mayor Jose Rafael Rocamora Gabarrón, visited, together with the Councillor for Culture, Wonders Fernández García, new archaeological excavations that have been developed in the city of Begastri.
They have been led in the field by the coordinator of the excavations and professor at the University of Murcia, José Antonio Molina, accompanied by the director of the Archaeological Museum of Cehegín and campaign coordinator, Francisco Peñalver Aroca.
Also present Mula municipal archaeologist Jose Antonio Zapata.
It's been fifteen days in excavations in which 21 students, coming from different parts of Spain, including Madrid, Valencia, Murcia, Alicante, etc, have been developing their university faculties in this branch of history.
Although the field work only last two weeks, laboratory work and registration and documentation material lasts all year.
This campaign has excavated the western part of the city in the Iberian levels to low levels the Visigoths and Romans;
and recovered large amount of pottery
The Mayor pointed out that "digging Begastri is the oldest of the region, taking more than thirty consecutive years. It is one of the most important archaeological jewels of our region and the proof is that the City has made an effort to give continuity this year, and we want to empower them and strengthen them with search of additional funding. "
We recall that in 1985 the Hon.
Cehegín City Council acquired the land Cabezo de Roenas and the archaeological site was declared a historic-artistic.
In 2002 it was declared a Cultural Interest.
Excavations began in the year 1980 from the hands of Professor of Ancient History don Antonino González Blanco, who remained as director of the same until his retirement in the year 2010
