The community of Franciscans of the Convent of San Esteban and the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Wonders have a solemn Mass celebrated the 288 years of the arrival of the patron saint of the town Cehegín, event that took place on July 25, 1725 and that is one of the most significant and momentous anniversaries of local history.
The Mass, presided over by the guardian of the convent and parish priest, Father Jose Torres, was attended by the Mayor of Cehegín, Jose Soria, and several councilors, as well as the president of the corporation that pays homage to the patron saint, Aurelio Ruiz, and other members of the board.
Many brothers of the fraternity and faithful attended the celebration, which culminated in a levee to the image of the Virgin in her dressing room.
During the homily, the guardian convent recalled how Cehegín arrival of the Virgin of Wonders from Italy on behalf of the Franciscan Francisco Moreno convulsed the life of the town, which soon began to worship the image of Mary with great devotion.
Fray José Torres thanked the audience attendance and conveyed his wish that this mass has continuity in time to remember, each year on July 25th, this date highlighted in Cehegín.
The Virgin of Wonders is a size Neapolitan eighteenth century, one of the finest examples of Baroque art of the Region of Murcia.
It was canonically crowned in 1925 and proclaimed patron in 1927.
His liturgical feast is celebrated on September 10.
