Soria Bascuñana and inaugurate the new excavations in the city of Begastri (03/02/2012)

The Government delegate, Joaquín García Bascuñana and Cehegín Mayor Jose Soria Garcia, inaugurated this morning the excavation and restoration Begastri archaeological site that has been made in recent months with joint funding from the Administration State, the Autonomous Community and City Hall.

In the summer of 2010, the Ministry of Public Cehegín granted through the 1% Cultural, a grant of 207,000 euros for the continuation of the excavation and restoration Begastri City, and to finish and open to the public interpretive center to be built on the site.

The investment was completed with input from others about 90,000 made by the City Council and the Autonomous Community (Department of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage)

For its part, the City Council indicated at that time was intended "is going to keep digging the entrance to the fort, while restoring go" and who "will carry out its museological, with trails, roads, signs and indicators that will make visitors can walk around the field alone. "

The remains of the ancient city of Begastri were declared of Cultural Interest in 1986, after which the City of Cehegin, on the recommendation of the Ministry of Culture, acquired the land where those are located to its owners.

The works which opens today began a little over a year and during its implementation there have been significant findings, like a fragment of a fourth century Christian SARCOF, who was elected by the Archaeological Museum in Murcia as' part of the Month ', or the realization that one of the entries is Begastri the most monumental Roman gate that exists in the Region of Murcia.

In the excavations, the city was part of its urban layout, highlighting the enormous walls, monumental buildings, cobblestone streets and sewers, in addition to appearing numerous pottery and utensils.

It should be noted that the works have been allowed to help train students wing of the University of Murcia and a group of geologists made an 'X' 3D terrain of the Acropolis, showing the buried structures, which will go a long way in the subsequent excavations.
