The City Council will make the Ruins of San Sebastian in a tourist and cultural city (22/12/2010)

Cehegín Mayor Jose Soria, and council Works and Services, Culture and Tourism, Juan Antonio Chico, Francisco Nicolás del Toro and April, respectively, visited the work to consolidate the ruins of the Hermitage of San Sebastian, from the fifteenth century.

According to Chico explained, "we are undertaking numerous activities such as cleaning the area, the consolidation of the ruins, the same night lighting and the upgrading of its perimeter, with wooden fencing and benches."

All this is part of a project to turn the ruins into a new tourist attraction and cultural city, "since we visited from January 20, the day we scheduled to open to coincide with the Day of San Sebastián and torchlight procession, "he assured the mayor.

The councilman of Culture, Nicholas del Toro, has stated that "these works involves an archaeological excavation and monitoring, which is conducting the Municipal Archaeological Museum director, Francisco Peñalver.

In addition, Del Toro has admitted that "we had a thorn in the Corporation, and that if we do not act soon, these ruins would be lost, end up being destroyed. If funds were the second stage, we would work to restore the chapel."

A strategic and privileged enclave

The strategic location and privileged extramural chapel erected in the mid-fifteenth century, could not be better choice, given the proximity of the town, the crossroads and the immediate proximity to the Río Argos, which made relatively accessible and convenient for all and, if we add the main function would play for centuries devoted to the worship of San Sebastian, because even better as a place frequented by locals, faithful and walkers.

It is presumed that he had a splendid coffered ceiling in their roofs, always attributed its destruction as they fled the French army retreating from Granada to Valencia land, staying in Cehegín from late September to early October, more than enough time for looting and destruction of churches, vestments, etc., and since the war of Independence of 1812 and has not regained the aforementioned cult chapel.

In the various visitations of the Order of Santiago Cehegín collected many details of the early days of such shrines outside the walls of the villa, where the oldest reflect the existence on the altar of an image canvas to pass of 1556, which is already inventoried as "a picture is very well carved package" and describe in detail the status of the chapel was almost five centuries, and its evolution over time.
