The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, through the Restoration Center of the Region of Murcia, recovers the size of the Holy Risen Christ of Cehegín, which today delivered the general director of Cultural Heritage, Juan Antonio Lorca, to those responsible for the ceheginera brotherhood of the same name.
It is an anonymous carving, of polychrome wood and stewed, punctually enlienzada and of small dimensions (112 x 23 x 30 centimeters), which was made in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century and usually remains in the Parish Church of the Soledad de Cehegín.
Lorca explained that "although it has been impossible to recover the original polychrome carving, practically disappeared, the technicians of the Restoration Center have done an excellent job that will allow all Cehegineros to enjoy the recovered size and in excellent conditions to their I pass through the streets of the municipality, during the next Sunday of Resurrection, A procession that will have a special meaning this year, since the brotherhood of which the Christ is titular is celebrating its 25th anniversary ".
The person in charge of Cultural Assets highlighted "the great patrimonial wealth of our Region in religious imagery, a school led by the teacher Salzillo and that allows to enjoy in all our municipalities beautiful carvings to which special attention is paid from the Center of Regional restoration, a leading center and reference for which every year, before Easter, pass numerous images to restore all their splendor and that are admired by Murcia and tourists once they are placed on their thrones or steps.
Work done
During the process of recovering the image of the Resurrected Christ, the technicians of the Restoration Center verified, after conducting several tastings, that the original polychrome layer was barely preserved, even being scratched so that a later repolicromia, composed of layer of gypsum and pictorial stratum, had greater adherence.
As the only witness of the original polychrome, the decorative motifs of the cloth and the mantle remained.
Being totally unviable its recovery, given the few remains preserved and its more than deficient state of conservation, finally it had to act on the current repolicromía, a stratum that was already restored in 1997 and that presented a poor state of conservation, making necessary a new intervention
The restoration process focused on the elimination of the chromatic reintegrations applied in 1997, also removing the underlying stuccoes then contributed, carrying out a cleaning of the pictorial layer of the repolicromía in order to eliminate remains of varnishes and old repaints that could not be retired in the previous restoration.
Next, the preparation layer was reconstructed, using much more similar materials than those used twenty years ago, and an intermediate varnish was applied in order to seal each one of the lagoons, preparing the pictorial surface for which it has been the most laborious phase, that of differentiated chromatic reintegration, made with the regatino technique.
Finally, a protective varnish was applied to the entire image.
Regarding the Cross that bears the image of Santo Cristo Resucitado de Cehegín, from the Restoration Center, a minimal intervention was made to correct small abrasions and specific losses of strata.
