Citizens have registered an initiative in the Regional Assembly to request explanations from the regional government for not having paralyzed the landfill of Sierra la Puerta, near the Argos dam in the municipality of Cehegín.
Jerónimo Moya, a spokesperson for Citizens in Cehegín City Council, recalled that on 23 February all the groups of the Regional Assembly voted in favor of a proposal to avoid the installation of the recycling and hazardous waste landfill, as well as to reject the expansion and substantial modification of the integrated environmental authorization to treat urban solid waste from a 60,000 tonne annual waste dump to a processing center with a much larger production capacity.
"The reality is that the landfill is being installed and is expected to start its activity in the near future," said Moya, who added that "it is regrettable that eight months have passed and the regional government has not fulfilled the mandate of the Regional Assembly" .
"This inaction of the authorities is causing great uncertainty and concern among the neighbors of the area," said the spokesman of Cs Cehegín, who recalled that the landfill has the entire municipality against "because it will generate serious problems for the citizens, especially those living in the districts of Canara, Valentín and La Pila, who have shown their resounding opposition to this project, and even have come forward to demand their halting.
