The Civil Guard surprises in Cehegín three alleged pillagers with archaeological pieces (29/01/2020)

Murcia, January 29, 2019. The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia has thwarted the plundering of archaeological material in Cehegín, where it has surprised three people in a place in the town conducting searches and excavations of protected objects.

After the action, which is framed in the 'Plan for the Defense of Spanish Historical Heritage', the Benemérita has denounced the three alleged pillagers and has seized about thirty archaeological pieces, metal detectors and pits used in the activity illicit clarified.

The proceedings took place in the immediate vicinity of the Historical Ensemble of Cehegín, when the Civil Guard was alerted that three people were met with metal detectors and stings making tastings in the field, apparently to extract old pieces from it.

Quickly, several members of the Civil Guard moved to the site and verified the facts.

After identifying the three suspects, the agents found that they were using three metal detectors and excavation tools, and that up to that moment they had in their possession about thirty archeological pieces allegedly obtained irregularly after conducting several excavations in the field.

These people lacked any type of authorization issued by public organizations or land owners to carry out this activity, so they have been denounced for infractions included in Law 4/2007, on Cultural Heritage of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia .

The alleged spoilers have been denounced for the breach of the obligation to communicate the discovery of archaeological remains and the delivery of them to the historical heritage services of the autonomous community, as well as for the performance of archaeological and / or paleontological actions without authorization.

Both infractions are sanctioned with fines ranging from 100,001 to 200,000 euros.

The civil guards seized all the tools used in the illicit activity clarified three metal detectors and three pits and about thirty archaeological pieces, which have been made available to the Archaeological Museum of Cehegín.

During the performance, the Civil Guard has had the collaboration of the Archaeological Museum of Cehegín and the General Directorate of Cultural Property (Historical Heritage Service) of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia (CARM).
