Cehegín City Council, in collaboration with CEPOAT (Center for Studies of the Near East and Late Antiquity of the University of Murcia) have organized and subsidized a new archaeological excavation campaign in the Visigoth city of Begastri.

From July 28 until August 4, a total of 20 students from different Spanish universities (Murcia, Madrid, Canary Islands, Cádiz, Melilla, Barcelona or Valencia), are being directed and coordinated by the Professor of Ancient History, Rafael González Fernández, from the University of Murcia, with the logistical support of Francisco Peñalver Aroca, Director of the Archaeological Museum of our town.

Today, Cehegín Mayor Alicia del Amor, as well as the Councilor for Culture, Juan Martínez, have visited these excavations.

This year's campaign is also serving the training of archeology students, as it has been organized as a Field Archeology Course in the Visigoda city of Begastri.

Through practical classes at the site, students can not only learn traditional excavation techniques, but also learn photogrammetry, as well as the use of level and Total Station, instrumental today necessary to undertake work in any multidisciplinary archaeological excavation .

At the archaeological level, during this week of intervention the area W of the site is being excavated as a continuation of the excavation of the previous year, where a large building seems to be.

The excavations will end next Sunday, which are providing enlightening data on the urban planning and organization of the city in different chronologies that will be presented and announced after its completion.
