The community of Franciscan Fathers of the convent of San Esteban and the Brotherhood of the Virgen de las Maravillas, have commemorated with a solemn Eucharist the 294 years of the arrival of the Patroness of Cehegín to the town, a fact that took place on July 25, 1725 and that constitutes one of the most significant and transcendental ephemeris in local history.
The Mass, chaired by the guardian of the convent, Fray Emilio Martínez, was assisted by the mayor of Cehegín, Alicia del Amor, and several councilors, as well as the president of the Brotherhood that worships the Patroness, Alfonso Ciudad, and other members of its board of directors.
Numerous brothers of the brotherhood and faithful participated in the celebration, which culminated in the presentation of the poster, which this year announces the novena, and that is traditionally done as a prologue to the September festivities.
It has been designed by Juan Antonio Berengüí.
During the homily, the conventual guardian recalled how the arrival in Cehegín de la Virgen de las Maravillas from Italy, commissioned by Franciscan Francisco Moreno, convulsed the life of the town, which soon began to venerate the Marian image with great devotion.
The Virgen de las Maravillas is a Neapolitan carving from the 18th century, one of the best exponents of Baroque art in the Region of Murcia.
She was crowned canonically in 1925 and proclaimed Patroness in 1927. Her liturgical holiday is celebrated on September 10.
