"How happy I feel to be here!", Bishop Chico in Cehegín (20/05/2019)

Cehegín turned yesterday with Bishop Sebastián Chico Martínez, son of this northwest town in Murcia, who wanted to celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving for his episcopal ministry.

At 5:00 p.m., the image of the Virgen de las Maravillas left the Franciscan convent to be present at the celebration.

Dozens of cehegineros accompanied her to the parish of Santa María Magdalena, where she was received by the Bishop of Cartagena, Bishop José Manuel Lorca Planes.

Bishop Sebastián Chico Martínez arrived at his parish of origin at 6:50 p.m.

At the door he made a penitential station and entered the temple to pray before the Blessed Sacrament and before the image of the Virgen de las Maravillas.

At 7:00 p.m., the celebration presided by the auxiliary Bishop began;

accompanied by Bishop Lorca Planes and Bishop Gil Hellín, Archbishop Emeritus of Burgos;

and about thirty priests.

The three diocesan seminars (San Fulgencio, Redemptoris Mater and San José) participated in the celebration.

Among the faithful were the family of Mons. Chico, the president of the Autonomous Community, the mayor of Cehegín, the Minister of Tourism and Culture, and members of the municipal corporation.

"How happy I feel to be here!", Thus began his homily Bishop Chico, thanking the presence of the patron saint of the town in this celebration: "There is no greater recognition for this ceheginero bishop that our Mother leaves her dressing room To be here".

The auxiliary Bishop recalled the day of his Baptism and thanked the priest Jesus Belmonte -presente in the celebration- who administered this sacrament in 1968, being coadjutor in this parish of Santa María Magdalena de Cehegín.

On the day of his appointment, Bishop Chico affirmed that the first objective of his episcopate would be to be "man of hope";

In the celebration that took place in Cartagena, on May 12, he said that the second objective would be priests and vocations;

yesterday, in Cehegín, he communicated the third objective: to foster communion.

"I want to be the encouragement of the Church to bring salvation to all men, to be a man of communion, of union," he said.

The Auxiliary Bishop ended his homily by encouraging the young people of Cehegín not to be afraid to respond to God's call.

After the homily, Bishop Chico renewed the faith before the baptismal font in which he received Baptism.

The parish priest of Santa María Magdalena, Javier Gómez, read the page of the book in which the information of Bishop Sebastián Chico is preserved: his departure from Baptism and the notes of his Confirmation, his priestly ordination and his episcopal ordination.

Before concluding the celebration, the mayor of the town, José Rafael Rocamora, on behalf of all the cehegineros, gave a pectoral to Mons. Chico with the monogrammatic cross of Cehegín;

and Msgr. Lorca Planes thanked "the affection" of the cehegineros to his auxiliary Bishop.

After the Mass, Bishop Chico accompanied the Virgin of the Wonders in procession on his return to the Franciscan convent.

Once there, the brotherhood of the Virgin gave him a picture with the image of the patron saint of Cehegín and told him that the board has appointed him Honorary Brother, recognition that will be formalized at the next patron saint festivities in September.
